Original antique Japanese woodblock-printed postcard depicting a traditional mushi-uri (虫売り / insect seller), dating from the late 1910s to early 1920s, Taishō period.

A matching example of this exact design is documented online as a woodblock print postcard from the late 1910s or early 1920s. The sign above the vendor combines pictograms with the character 虫 (mushi / insect) and represents several types of singing insects traditionally sold in Japan, including matsumushi, suzumushi, and kutsuwamushi.

The scene shows the seated insect seller beneath a willow tree, surrounded by finely depicted green insect cages in different forms. Insect sellers were a traditional seasonal feature of Japanese urban life, selling singing insects and decorative cages for people to enjoy at home. Historical research documents this trade from the Edo period into the Meiji and Taishō eras.
